Biography

Born 1975 in Locarno Giovanni Carmine is a freelance curator and art critic. He was curator at the
Kunstraum Walchturrm in Zürich and has organised a number of exhibitions for various institutions like 999 and Updating Landscapes for the Centro d’Arte Contemporanea Ticino and the monographic exhibition of Norma Jeane Body Proxy, who was shown at the Helmhaus Zürich, the Swiss Institute New York, and the Kunstverein Freiburg. He has also initiated a number of projects like Unloaded in former réduit swiss-army bunkers (in collaboration with Catherine Hug, www.artbunker.ch) and recently the little off-space zimmerfrei in Lugano (www.zimmerfrei.li). He regularly contributes to magazines (Flash-Art, Kunst- Bulletin, Parkett) and writes articles for catalogues and publications. The last publication he edited is PSYOP Post 9/11 Leaflets and is a part of a project he realized with the artist Christoph Büchel for the 7th Sharjah Biennale (United Arab Emirates). In 2001 he won the Swiss Award for art critic and curating of the Swiss Federal Office for Culture. Giovanni Carmine has been director of Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen since 2007. He lives and works in Zürich.
