Forever exists by virtue of the convention which ties the artist to FRAC Lorraine. The work takes the form of a webcam installed in one of the exhibition halls which potentially allows the artist to observe, non-stop and forever, whatever or nothing that goes on in the room.
Thus two key questions are being raised:
- what does “forever” mean on the scale of the lifetime and of the desire of an artist, an institution, an artwork?
- can a work influence the customary chain of relations: “artist > work of art > the institution > the public” and invert it: “the public > institution > work of art > artist”?
With Forever, it is the institution and the stories it generates (whether personal, institutional, or public) that become the object of the work of art. The public can access these visual narratives at the artist’s online journal (http://doragarcia.net/inserts/forever/) and in a series of books (5 between 2004 and 2012) bound together in a unique volume.
